Billboard Global Excl US Top 20 Ranking (Fall 2025) : Sabrina Carpenter, Kpop Demon Hunters, KATSEYE, sombr

Where we left off with Summer Ranking is that the pop chart has been stale for a while beside for the this chart I'm using and even then, no one can denied the steep downfall in quality that occured during Summer where a lot of artists should've been hitting big but I guess they got cold feet because Morgan Wallen basically rammed his 37 inch pp called "his album" on the chart. Thankfully the start of the Fall season, the pop chart looks healthy again with only five songs being carried over the last ranking. These crop of new songs are also very interesting to talk about as well. From the biggest animated movie of the year surprising everyone on how big it was, to Sabrina Carpenter's follow up to her star making album with diminshing return, new comers left and right, and of course discourses! Let's get this ranking started shall we?

BAD TIER

20. Just Keep Watching - Tate McRae

The chart for this season overall is actually improved a lot from last season, but there are still carryover from that chart and most of them are not good so let's get through them quickly and we'll be reshuffling some stuff here. This one is still as bad as when I first covered it and my opinion hasn't changed since then. Though apparently a lot of people did watched that overbloated mess that is the F1 The Movie that it's the official song of the summer according to MTV VMA...yeah this is definitely the song that the bleakest summer season deserved.

19. Manchild - Sabrina Carpenter

Welp this definitely shrunk on me a lot. The problem I mentioned in my last ranking got worse by subsequent listen. The worst part though is that it's not even the worst part of Man's Best Friend. I know the intention behind the wink nudging of the lyrical contents that hide her sadness and frustrations. And I do kinda agree as a trans woman that yeah a lot of men especially Gen Z ones are kinda asshole. But playing on tropes and trying to take it ironically is not really the way to go either. We'll get to more on this problem later but all I'm saying that her post Disney angst is the ones that I don't think work unlike Olivia Rodrigo.

18. Don't Say You Love Me - JIN

Okay this grew on me slightly. But it doesn't negate the fact that this song is a facsimile of "Leave Before You Love Me" which in turned a facsimile of "Last Christmas". I think what I said on my last ranking I stand by is that I'm sick of these kinds of 80s pastiche and I want other parts of 80s music to be explored more. Heck that's why I don't mind APT because at least that song took inspiration of the early 80s new wave and early MTV novelty cheese. This song on the other hand is just boring plodding mess that's barely saved by JIN performance.

MEH TIER

17. The Dead Dance - Lady Gaga

If there's one thing that I like about looking at music history is seeing a lot of artists that got massive success from a viral trend will always make a sequel song to that memetic thing or just do anything that really doesn't have substance but you are big so you don't care. Yeah this is the vibe I got from listening to this which is just pathetic even for Gaga. I don't know who thought that we should bring back the messy productions of Born This Way and make it even more sterile but here we are. Of course naturally this will be the era where Lady Gaga will get her Album Of The Year at the Grammys probably.

16. When Did You Get So Hot? - Sabrina Carpenter

This song really synthesized my problem with the album as a whole. Barely run two minutes as Sabrina meet her older peer she met in probably high school and surprised that he became hot. So after a breakup she tried to hook up with him with the mind that on he's hot so why not a lot of women go after him. My main issue with this song is the ironic detachment and attitude is a lot. While it can work to her favor, on this album it's everywhere and it got repetitive quickly. There's no song like Juno or even Taste where the former felt very sincere while the latter the joke really played out very tongue and cheek. To me it became more mean spirited more than anything. We'll get to the best part of the album later on but Man's Best Friend felt like a sophomore slump...even though this is her seventh albums.

15. Tu Vas Sin (fav) - Rels B

Okay so this is Rels B and he's a Spanish artist and I don't know much about him. Honestly this is probably one of my problem with me. While I do love a lot of latin music, when there's some songs that really run of the mill to me I can't tell if this song is actually great in the wider Spanish speaking community. I do know that a lot of people in the reggaeton scenes saw Spanish native artists to be a bit of a poser and that's from me looking from a far. So I'm probably feeling a bit better for calling this a bit lousy. My main problem is definitely the non charisma of Rels B and it dragged the song to the ground because of it.

14. Rich Man - aespa

Do you guys gals and pals think that Aespa might be running out of idea? Because how else do you explain this tuneless bore that sounded dated even in 2022. This singles really highlight the problem that K-Pop has been grappling since NewJeans got caught in a legal battle. Seems like a lot of them are experimenting but to diminished return. Aespa is really a great example of this because both Supernova and Whiplash showed they can experiment with other pop genres so well that this song seems to be a step back which I agree to be honest.

DECENT TIER

13. no tiene sentindo - Beele

This is still decent but it's still surprising that Beele hasn't got his due in America just yet. I think it really said something about the downturn of latin music as a whole even after 2023 explosion of Regional Mexican sound. It's just my new observation.

12. No Broke Boys - Tinashe & Disco Lines

We haven't had any EDM song to become big hit since forever now do we? I mean EDM is still a popular genre but most of those hits are concentrated in Europe and maybe UK and Canada. But a crossover hit like this is still unprecendented y'know. Though this song is only decent, I'm at awe with how this remix of the Tinashe song that really sounded like a bar in Netherland at 9 AM became a hit at all. Guess that's what TikTok will gave you. Speaking of which good luck with American made algorithm by the way.

11. DAISIES - Justin Bieber

You don't go for Justin Bieber because he's a good artist. He's one of if not the most milquetoast artist to have ever existed. Even during his teenage idol era he's still run of the mill pop star that only got hate because of his voice, presentation, and his songs. I tried to listen to his surprise album "SWAG" and honestly while I still think that it's very one note and boring, Daisies is the most interesting song here because of the producer that made this song. The song was produced by both Dijon and Mk.Gee. Dijon gave the RnB style production while Mk.Gee gave the guitar and the texture of the song which is very lo-fi. This song could've only been made in this era of productions where the guitar is heavy and the production is very scrappy. Out of all the songs on this ranking this will be the one that gonna grow on me and we shall see if that happens.

10. Soda Pop - Saja Boys

And here comes the main event of the ranking. Kpop Demon Hunters came out of nowhere and for the rest of summer has been the surprise hit for both movies and music. An animated musical with as blunt of title as that shouldn't slap this hard but yeah the movie is great. As an avid animation enjoyer, the Sony style of animation really came through with this one while also giving the movie more identity that's very much South Korean. It doesn't afraid to showcase all things Korean and that's their assets. It couldn't have been released at a better time than right now and overall the movie I'll gave it 9/10.

Now with all the success there's always controversy and especially for this song. For the record I'll be only picking three highest charting KDH songs for this week and Soda Pop is one of them. Anyways, this song got flagged because of an article where the producer of the song said that some parts of the song are being polished by ChatGPT. Now as of writing this apparently that's a mistranslated error because in reality ChatGPT only helping with brainstorming the ideas of the song and not the production of the song. So that's why there's a whistling in the song and how this sounded like BTS sellout phase (sellout is not a bad word for me but if it does offend you then sorry).

I'm of two minds when it comes to the usage of generative AI in media. I am a staunch enemy of using generative AI to generate art like paintings, movies, or here music. But I can't fault someone to use Gen AI for brainstorming as long as the production of the art is still made by human which this clearly is. But it does rob the sensation of gathering people to discuss what kind of song you want to make and for that I have to deduct this good song to a mearly decent one.

9. How It's Done - HUNTR/X

Meanwhile this song is definitely a pastiche of Gen 3 type of braggadocious song as the introduction of the demon hunters who became a Kpop idols. It's bombastic and really fit the theme of the movie at the beginning with awesome airplane to stage scenes. Listening it on its own...different stories. I definitely prefer their other song we'll get to and What It Sounds Like just because of production alone because this one...is a mess. That orchestral hit will never be not funny to me since I listened to too many Distantcry songs. But this does sounds like the "I'm back bitch" song and that mostly be mixed bag so this song is mixed bag saved by the awesome sequence.

GOOD TIER

8. Gabriela - KATSEYE

One of my favorite songs that got caught between the year end is Touch by KATSEYE. What I love about that song is how very innocence this song felt and yeah that's probably for the best as the intro for your new girl group. After that landmark debut they followed it up with one of the most divisive song with Gnarly. A hyperpop style song co-written by Alice Longyu Gao and it was a bonker follow up to Touch. Suddenly you have blocky synth, vocal filter, and the subject matter about the satire of pop culture that's very much in the wheelhouse of hyperpop. Honestly I love the ridiculous nature of the song, but I do agree they have to follow that up with something a bit "normal". So they released a latin inspired funk song that's basically Jolene but with Gabriela.

Now with this one the pivot again to make...basically "Slumber Party" by Britney Spears & Tinashe but with Spanish guitar and more dynamic percussion. I like Slumber Party but I'll say that KATSEYE really improved it with the Spanish guitar and more prominent bass. Now again this song is about Gabriela being this beautiful girl that will hurt you like Jolene. I think there's a flaw in this because it's now one v five rather than one v one with Dolly version. That really created an unrealistic imbalance but I do think the Spanish influence made this one has the same vibe as telenovela and I couldn't agree more with that.

7. Tears - Sabrina Carpenter

This is the best case of Sabrina Carpenter having the music behind her ironic detachment about relationship. While the wink wink nudge nudge attitude is still there, when the productions is this good, who really cares about what she said. This production is immaculate and very much it's about the drums. This drum is so crisp and really giving the texture that the album was desperately needed. I love the drum fills before the breakdown and the strings are immaculate with that too. It's just a good disco song that only being hindered by short length of the song.

6. JUMP - Blackpink

You know YG you can just let these women rest especially when three fourths of the members are currently rolling out album cycle. You can just wait for their comeback but anyways. This is the first Blackpink singles since Born Pink released in 2022 to a mixed review. And what we got here is an EDM song produced by Diplo with a decent groove and the heavy bass and horns drop...with a hardstyle breakdown right in the end. This song is so weird like the fact that they used hardstyle breakdown at the end at all is just baffling. It made this catchy song even more peculiar. Honestly I prefer this style over their usual trap pop stuff but still the fact that they're using Hardstyle, a electronic dance genre that's very niche to the Benelux area, for their mainstream debut is still surreal.

GREAT TIER

5. Man I Need - Olivia Dean

Well this came out of nowhere...if you didn't pay attention to the UK chart. Olivia Dean is the newest in the line of blues RnB boom that gripped UK right now with RAYE being at the forefront of this revolution. And with this song I can see why this became the crossover hit for her because this song is very easy to get into. The production here is immaculate with the bass, that perfectly timed piano, and the fact that every instrument here didn't hinder Olivia's very assertive vocals is just sublime. She needs that assertiveness because the subject matter is about that she's very assertive and trying to get love. I do wish that she got like a bridge and final chorus but still I'm glad that UK still imports their best here.

4. Back To Friend - sombr

I listened to sombr's debut album and it's a great listen you should check it out if you don't mind him being a bit petty about his breakups. I just found out while listening to the album is that he produced it himself and that really making me love this song more. So much of a rock music these days are always too clean for their own good. But, with Sleep Token (Yes they have their problems but you can't deny their influence) and sombr it's not like they're doing punk but they are trying their best to make a rock sound while also updating with the scrappy way to produced a song and it really worked here.

3. Love Me Not - Ravyn Lenae

This song is very good and I again don't have a lot of opinions on it. But I do have some opinions as to how and why I listen to these type of music and also why I love it so much. I think there are a lot of people that listen to music without paying attention to lyrics and sometimes I can empathized with that sentiment. While yes the lyrics can make or break songs, in the grand scheme of things music mattered more and especially as someone who learned English from pop songs. If a song sounds good it's good and the lyrics became window dressing. That's my feeling right now about this song.

2. Golden - HUNTR/X

And here it is the main event. Golden has been the best thing to happened to pop music this year probably. I think this is more of an indictment about popular music as a whole because wow people are not listening to music at all. Maybe it's because shits going around the world right now but things as recreationally as music seems to be left behind. I mean I get why that happened but this steep decline after last year is crazy. Golden and Kpop Demon Hunters exploited weak charts that they can dominate the charts for more than three to four months. Not even the Disney movies have this kinds of success but it made sense because the song itself is great. My favorite thing about Golden is how it's just IVE song to the core and I love IVE. It's a phenomenon that will be carved in the pop music history as the most successful animated musical movie ever and the masses are yearning for more of this.

1. 12 To 12 - sombr

You know nu disco most of them have always been mixed bag for me but when it hits, it really hits. This song is probably the best one since the days of Dua Lipa's Future Nostalgia and it's not even close. I really love when a rock artist or band trying to dipped their toes to dance music and this is a prime example as to why. You have this smoldering guitar, tight bass, the vocal filter, and the drums that's organic enough to hold everything together. I do love the writing on this one better than Back To Friends as well. The sense of longing is better fit for a breakup song rather than the notion of can't go back to being friends. This is what Maroon 5 would've sounded like if they didn't abandoned their dance rock sounds on their Hands All Over era. I think this is better than Maroon 5 because how swaggering this song sound and Sombr is definitely a better performer than Adam Levine. So yeah if Maroon 5 is now at their exit door, sombr is happy to enter it.

As per usual, I'll be recommending songs that just fall short from this ranking that deserved some recognitions. For this week lowkey I'm struggling to recommend songs because either most of these songs are just decent or unremarkable. I was planning to use both this chart and the regular Global 200 but it only yielded me one song that I genuinely love for the recommendation...So be it then.

All The Way - BigXthaPlug ft. Bailey Zimmerman (TW: 180 PK: 23 WK: 23)
This is the only song only charted on Global 200 and honestly it's one of the best crossover country hit of the year. What I love about this song is that the productions here are done in house, so the trap country sound here are more substatial and not flimsy when you get Nashville producer at the wheel. Also I love how this song is about breakup but it's not pissy or something like that, more like exasperation that he moved on but she didn't. And the detail of the song doesn't antagonized her either reminiscing the good time they had. Solid stuff

The Subway - Chappell Roan (TW: 104 PK: 10 WK: 6)
It's a damn shame that this song is tanking without radio support because it's one of her best singles to date. Only Red Wine Supernova is more superior here. The pain and sorrow of breakup song here is so felt and so heard with excellent performance by Chappell. This is Alanis at her most retrospective and that's a compliment. Perfect example of doomed yuri in song form.

Sugar On My Tongue - Tyler, The Creator (TW : 110 PK: 110 WK: 5)
Seems like this is the song that became popular from Don't Tap The Glass and it's a decent one. Would've preferred Ring Ring Ring or the title track but the fact that a dance track by Tyler is staying long enough to be here is commendable.

House Tour - Sabrina Carpenter (TW: 59 PK: 33 WK: 2)
This is the best song on the album just because it's probably the only song that doesn't have layers of irony it in. It's just a song about house tour as a euphemism for y'know. Also this song really captured the best part of new jack swing era. My only gripe is that the vocal production is a bit muddy but other than that this is a standout from a mediocre album.

Tabola Bale - Juan Reza, Diva Aurel, Silet Open Up & Jacson Seran (TW: 78 PK: 69 WK: 4)
You know the chart is weak right now that an Indonesian song with modestly big streams can just chart high on this chart. That's something I've been noticing this year's chart in that because of the vacuum of American music, a lot of non-western countries have stepped up and charted pretty high up. If I cover this chart weeks earlier I would've covered a Turkish song and a song from a Bollywood movie. But yeah this Indonesian song felt out of place among the Sabrinas and the Chappells so yeah.

That's it from me and definitely stay tuned from me because list season is around the corner and I'll see you there!

Billboard Global Excl US Top 20 Ranking (Summer 2025) : Alex Warren, Ed Sheeran, JENNIE, Sabrina Carpenter

...Yeah I got nothing here.

I mean what else can I say about the chart right now that a lot of people have said? This chart is so stale and stagnant that even Japan Hot 100 looked more active (that's because they're doing ACR style streams downturning for their dinosaurs). It seems like people just doesn't want to listen to new music because why am I seeing Beautiful Things STILL IN THE TOP 10??? Yeah it has been a wasteland for the chart and honestly I don't have much hope for the Hot 100...the same can't really be said for Global Excl US chart. Even though global chart is having the same kinds of crisis of just pop music in general because this chart excluded America, well firstly there's only one Morgan Wallen song on the chart and it's buried six feet deep here, but also the fact that the most dominant countries here are Canada, Mexico, Colombia, and UK making a lot of global hits to be really good. They're very varied too surprisingly from dancehall, reggaeton, amapiano, regional mexican, and even some indie rock and music from Persian and Punjabi area. Yeah it seems like this chart is so interesting that I don't have anything to say. Now I'm gonna try and put the tier of the ranking from shit tier to great tier and scored it from 0-5 scale. Now there's no Shit tier here so we starting out with

BAD TIER

20. Yeah now I can't wait for BTS to comeback because what is this bottom of the barrell stuff?

20. Don't Say You Love Me - JIN

I think I'm done with these type of synthpop that only gotten big because of the name attached to it. It's slow, very trite, and the only thing that keeping this song from the shit tier is the bass is actually sounded really good. But yeah I think these type of songs I'm just done by the time "Left and Right" by Charlie Puth ft. Jung Kook (oh hey speaking of BTS) because it's usually a sign that this song will be popular anyways because BTS Army are starving and they need everything to survive the drought. BTS that I love always have flair and personality behind them and with some stuff from their solo outings, none of them really highlighted their strength and just show their weaknesses without them being together. I'm glad that BTS will have a comeback next year because this cow have already been emptied.

19. You know there's one time that I actually think this song is great...what was I thinking back then this song soured on me harder than those vinegars that the monks accidentally made.

19. Ordinary - Alex Warren

Look I get it that people are getting really sick of this song now that this is the only thing to a bonafide smash hit that we got this year, but I really get why this song became very popular. Heck I also have said that this song is great before. But why this song has soured on me so much that it wound up being here? Well when I first heard it I was really enchanted by the production with that string melody and the choir. But after repeated listened that barely registered drums and lack of robust foundation made this song very hollow and empty. And once I've read the lyrics it's evident that these type of sounds doesn't work...no actually it worked, but in a non descript way that just doesn't reflect in anything. It's like when you eat something like plain potato chips. You love potato chips but without the seasonings and even sauces, it became bland and just empty carb. This is what it feels like and just like any other potato chips it can caused blister in your mouth. This is how I feel about this song now and we desperately want new stuff here.

18. So y'all excited for F1 movie? I think the rise of motorsports movies are fascinating to me because sometimes they're either Oscar bait (a good Oscar bait but still) or they are just there to entertain. I think this movie is trying to do both because it has a soundtrack made by big artists...to diminished results

18. Just Keep Watching - Tate McRae

Is this because she made a song called Sports Car? Because I don't really know why is she here. Anyways Tate McRae has a weird 2025 so far. From her album actually having sort of critical acclaim to flushed all of that down the drain with her trying to get a #1 for working with Morgan Wallen (it's like if Ashanti has to get a #1 hit from collaborating with Toby Keith). And now this which is like a second Red Bull car having a spin. I don't what to say here other than this is just a formless mess of clashing percussion, nondescript melody, and annoying drop. Also it's kinda rich from Tate to say to "just keep watching" when I know that the Morgan Wallen stuff really hurt your chances for the audience to keep watching. This is the sort of movie soundtrack slog that always making the experience of the movie slightly worse by their presence alone and yeah not good for her prospect.

MEH TIER

17. Okay this song has become grating now.

17. Like JENNIE - JENNIE

Mantra is still a great song but I do believe that JENNIE having more of an impact than even Rose (well I'd go back and forth on that) is kinda baffling because she's not that good as a soloist. She doesn't bring anything to the table beside being genre chamillion and even then her guest stars have been shown her off the table. Mantra was a fluke because this song got worse overtime. It's just the overplay really that made the flaws even more glaring so the things I said before but more negative.

16. Manchild - Sabrina Carpenter

Now I have a lot of thoughts about this song some of it are good some of it are shit. I think that in terms of production the keys are great but that chorus is so overstuffed and I think Jack Anthonoff shouldn't really touch country production at all because that guitar is so plucky and out of place here. I do like Sabrina performance here but it's nothing really new especially with her another wink wink nudge nudge attitude. If this was came out in the 80s she would've been placed in the same pedastal as Paula Abdul and that isn't saying much. It's also detrimental to the lyrics which is once again is a kiss off anthem but like Please Please Please, she played it ironically and honestly that's the weaker part of the song. Now I'm a trans girl so I don't know much about how cishet women do in dating, but I think that this type of generalization of gender role is kinda backwards looking? I think the implication of "innocent woman" is really what irk me about this song in general. Sabrina despite thinking this ironically does sometimes believe it unironically. It's a mish mash of 80s kitsch with zoomer irony poisoning that really rubs me the wrong way. Honestly not looking forward to that album.

DECENT TIER

15. PASSO BEM SOLTO - ATLXS

Finally after what a full year of this series? I am able to review the weird, wacky, and sometimes really dodgy and AI invested phonk genre. For those who don't know phonk is a subset of EDM or dance music that came out of Funk carioca. The biggest characteristic of this sound is big booming bass with little low end (basically making dance music with the characteristic of lo-fi recording). This is dance music's equivalent of soundcloud rap at its infancy. Loud, blaring, and really doesn't care about what your feeling is as long as it's catchy enough. This is definitely different than Funk carioca which is more in tune and have influence in Miami bass. Phonk actually chose another different subgenre of hip-hop, Memphis style rap. Now most of these songs are honestly Tiktok bait but one has to caught on to the streaming at some point and here we are. Now this song is fine but that AI album cover...yeaaaah.

14. Tu Sancho - Fuerza Regida

Probably the most tuneful Fuerza Regida hit I've heard at least. They finally got the bass production and general corridos tumbados sound that doesn't sound like dying ass. Look even if it's passable, the frontman of Fuerza Regida is still sounds like a jackass even when his production has improved.

13. La Plena - W Sound, Ovy On The Drums & Beele

This song grew on me slightly but the bigger story here is Beele which have a breakout hit in the reggaeton scene. Oh speaking of Beele

12. No Tiene Sentindo - Beele

Internationally, Beele is probably the breakout star of the year. And even though his voice is kinda wishy washy, I can see his appeal. I really like how sandy the song is but the thing that bothered me is the reverb and the mixing. The vocals here are mixed at the back of the melody and it is jarring. Still I do think it's a matter of time Beele is cross over in the US but with the state of latin music right now...yeah.

11. Azizam - Ed Sheeran

Welp after his back to roots passion project album didn't really moved units, Ed is back in the pop game this time is a little bit interesting at least. The title of the song is a Persian word for "my beloved" and with this and another song that we will get into, I think he's gonna make an album equivalent of a travel vlog with 100k subs. And it certainly sounds like it because while the song is noble enough to try and capture the Persian music scenes (even had a songwriter who is Iranian), because it's Ed Sheeran pop star mode, the luster and the spark of what made Persian pop music or what it supposed to be got sucked out and what we left is a facsimile of the real deal. I do love the faster tempo and the acoustic accent. But other than that it's just another Ed Sheeran pop song with a hint of culture behind it.

10. Show Me Love - WizTheMc ft. bees & honey

There have been a rise in afrobeats/amapiano song with house or atmospheric flair to it on the chart right now. This is probably the biggest one from the amapiano side and I feel conflicted. For once the beautiful piano with that sandy percussion is perfect. And WizTheMc is really fine with his vocal delivery. I think my main issue is that it's too short and the reverb is being abused a bit much. Still I'm interested in how this turns out especially that both genres are now being relegated to European market.

GOOD TIER

9. Triple Lavada - Esau Ortiz

This one is interesting in that it's supposed to be in the umbrella of Regional Mexican sound but the only thing that could be the indictation is the trumpets and the guitar. Everything else sounded like a groovy sounding song that really harken back to the 1999 Latin boom. You are greeted with the heavy phat bass and then the pseudo rap delivery and then the drum fills and you hear more guitar, trumpets, and then the chorus becoming a bit atmospheric with the strings and the reverb and honestly if it wasn't for the short length it would actually in the Great tier. As it is, it's a certainly unique song that ended with Egyptian stereotypical melody??? Seriously what are you song!

8. Undressed - sombr

I think rock is back? Well this is more sounding like the indie pop that was really popular in Europe in the mid to late 2000s but since it has guitar and bass, yeah rock song. And I'm glad that these kinds of songs are getting popular because we need variety and honestly this song succeeded in the sound part. That bass with the plucky guitar, thick atmosphere, perfectly blended drum, and the vocal harmonies in the chorus is so dreamy and airy. The reason why this song isn't higher is that the lyrics is kinda pissy and he's so baby about it. Like dude she's already moved on why are you not doing the same with you complaining every time she's meeting you. Anyways you know what song that really shrunk on me?

7. Abracadabra - Lady Gaga

Yeah this song has shrunk on me in some ways. I think after listening to the album really soured my listening experience of this song. It's still good but the flaws just keep getting exposed here. Like Lady Gaga performance really kinda phoning in, to the production that isn't as creative nor as transgressive, and the lyrics which is just nonsense in a way that isn't interesting. It's more of a Gaga pastiche which could be the case if it wasn't for How Bad Do U Want Me and Zombieboy really evolved the sound to more a contemporary sound while also being transgressive.

GREAT TIER

6. Sapphire - Ed Sheeran

At the time I'm writing this part, there has been a video circulating around talking about Ed Sheeran and how his writing and style ruined pop music or something. It wasn't a good video and it's kinda ironic how they trying to compared Ed to Taylor when in reality both have been labeled as inaunthetic for years. Btw I don't believe that because the former has made songs that will make your bawls your eyes out especially his songs about losing family members that always tug my heart string. While the latter has made her mission it seems to be open as she wants sometimes too open. Anyways it's kinda disingenious talking about Ed Sheeran like that when this song exist. Like I said this album is probably gonna play more into his global influence and this time exploring Punjabi sound. He even bringing in Arjit Singh who's very big in Punjabi music scenes. Yes him singing in Punjab is very stilted at best. But when that ending where he got surrounded by this pop song inspired by Punjabi culture I just melt. This song is in the right heart and came from the right place and I can commend that.

5. Back To Friends - sombr

With the success of Arctic Monkeys, it's only a matter of time that someone made a song that sounds like indie rock of the 2000s and this is just a prime stake beef of it. I love that big piano accented with the guitar and drums and even though he got his vocal filter on, on the chorus the song sounds so lush with the added reverb talking about him not accepting that he can be friends with his ex. And in this one it's very understandable why he acts this way. The bridge is the star of the show yeah this song has a bridge...such an alien concept these days huh. But yeah this song is just something the chart needed and I hope he got more of this.

4. Shake It To The Max (FLY) - MOLIY, Silent Addy, Skillibeng, & Shenseea

Man remeber in 2014 we have new booty anthem every ten days or so? Well now we have a real deal ass anthem on the chart and honestly this is such a UK hit that I'm surprised it broke through the US chart. But I get it this song is an afrofusion between afrobeats with dancehall and you can hear it. That drum pattern, the flute I think, and the atmosphere screamed cookout. The remix here worked because both Shenseea and Skillibeng understood the assignment here. Again this is the most UK hit that I heard in American chart to date not because it has thick British accent, but it understood the multicultural aspect of UK right now. I'm glad this became a hit.

3. Love Me Not - Ravyn Lenae

There's always that one song that you don't have anything to say beside that it's great and this is one of them. Like I know why I love this song. The production is like a mix of indie pop and RnB which shouldn't worked but that bassline just make it work. It's just good pop music man go ahead and listen to it. But this place meant...

2. Baile Inovidable - Bad Bunny

1. DTMF - Bad Bunny

I still think that 2025 played out the same like 2022 but in backward. Honestly this summer wouldn't have been bleak if Bad Bunny released Debi Tirar Mas Fotos in the summer instead in the middle of Winter. But still what an album and I have to pick like two songs from the album for my best list and it's gonna be hard so stay tuned for that.

Before I go, I wanna bring back this section which is a recommendation of songs that fall below what's eligible for this ranking and that's also new as well. So let's go we have 5 songs here.

Capaz - Alleh & Yorghaki: The subtitle here is Merengueton and yeah that's very much an apt description of the song. This song really balance reggaeton and merengue really well to become my sleeper hit of the year.

Party 4 U - Charli XCX: With the success of Brat it's a matter of time that Charli's deep cut will become a tiktok hit but I wasn't expecting this to be honest. A deepcut from her pandemic album that's very much not mainstream sounding as she's doing more of what her hyperpop mixtape did and it created the most bonkers and yet most intimate album of her career. No wonder this caught on because people are longing for that intimacy that we just don't get anymore.

Bloodline - Alex Warren ft. Jelly Roll: By virtue of the guest star I should've hate this. But it's probably one of the few indie folk revival songs that resonate the most especially talking about breaking the expectation of your familial bloodline. Honestly Alex Warren's other singles are better especially Burning Down. It's just ashamed his biggest hit is the least interesting one.

Blessings - Calvin Harris ft. Clementine Douglas: Calvin Harris is finally back and deliver yet again a great piano house singles with a great vocal from Clementine Douglas. Sometimes a good beat and decent singers can carried a song in general and this is a prime example of that.

Mangu - Fourtwnty ft. Charita Utami: I don't even love this song but it's telling how dire the chart is that an Indonesian song can just barged in like that charted high on the Global chart. This and NIKI success is so bizarre and yet I'll welcomed it since y'know Indonesian pride...but also fuck Prabo-

Top 10 Best Hit Songs of 2015 (Anniversary!)

Pop music has always been part of my life but it was a long journey to where I am now as a person. Deep down inside pop music was and still is my escapism for me as a closeted queer person. There's something transcendant about pop music that I listened to, like it would take me to other places that honestly I belong to. But, back then I didn't know and instead I was running away for who I really am right now. Pop music was my respite and it was a place where I could express myself in general. I always grew up with pop music ever since I saw Lady Gaga and Bad Romance, probably one of the most informative memories when I was little were watching Bad Romance music video on old YouTube VEVO. Since then I just love looking at American pop culture through YouTube and again popular music. Around 2013 however, I started to be interested with review youtubers, the likes of Nostalgia Critic and AVGN (since I was getting into game) and with Nostalgia Critic I came across a channel called Todd In The Shadow. I watched dozens of his video after I found him and after that I was introduced with the wealth of channels talking about pop music. Granted it was the mid 2010's, so a lot of those channels focused on the negatives. Then I found another channel called Spectrum Pulse at the end of 2014 and liking his works as well. When I looked at his channel he got a new series called Billboard Breakdown and I was hooked to the pop singles charts. And on the eve of 2015 I decided to make a blog and here we are now.

2015 honestly was one of the perfect time to get into pop music before the despair that is the rest of the decade. 2015 just like the year itself sat in the middle of a transition time between the fun pop EDM and pop rap and the moody dark brooding sound of trap rap, monogenres, and tropical house. And even though it was a transition time, it's probably one of the perfect way to end the party because this year is fantastic. Not all are winner though. Country had an existential crisis after the hangover of bro country, a lot of novelty songs that became popular because Vine, and rock just missing completely. But the good stuff are just outweighing the bad here. Pop music is as big as ever and all the most popular songs of all time list came from here, rap gradual shift from pop rap to the more trap influence, EDM having one of its best year with tropical house and future bass on the horizon, and RnB had some big debuts. To celebrate my ten years here, I'm gonna reveal my favorite songs from 2015. Here are some criteria for the best list.

  1. Anything that debuted on the year-end for 2015 according to Billboard Hot 100 and the repeats will be replaced by 14 songs that missed the Year-end according to TOTC.
  2. I also wanna include songs that didn't get to debut in any Billboard Hot 100 Year-end lists but appeared on 100 most streamed songs on Spotify for 2015 Link here
  3. All of this are my opinions at the end of the day so let's be civil about this.
Okay without further ado as we say hello to this year that definitely the last time we'll be optimistic as we count down...

TOP 10 BEST HIT SONGS OF 2025

    10. Now I'm not really familiar with this song per say, but I know the hype that this song caused in the broader music landscape not just in the pop music space. This is why I'm choosing to add the most streamed songs that released in 2015 because I love hindsight like that! So when I saw that this song was really high up here and probably really influenced pop music down the line? Yeah I at least have to pay respect to it.

10. The Less I Know The Better - Tame Impala

There are saying that if you don't love something you at least respect it, and honestly that's what I'm feeling about the song. I honestly missed the Tame Impala train because I was into Twenty One Pilots back then. All I know of Tame Impala is that it's one of those band that sounded like just a guy singing in it. But, seems like after this album Currents was unleashed, Kevin Parker became a sought after producer in the business with his latest produced song Houdini with Dua Lipa became a monster hit. And this song really is one of the few songs from this year that aged the best.
That bassline alone should be the thing that people will studied for years to come because of how immaculate and just tight it is. It sounds buttery while the vocals bringing this airy and dreamy atmosphere. This song is like a croissant honestly. A very rich buttery pastry that has tonnes of layers to it's productions...but also the ones that should not be eaten everyday. Yeah this is the part where I say while I do respect how this song is made, I think there are better songs that are more long lasting for me. Also the lyrics is kinda pathetic and very pissy and that really detract the song a bit for me. Still what a song to announced yourself to the pop sphere.

    9. Now for this next song here...well if you listened to the radio at all in early 2015 and were sick of the song...I'm sorry.

9. Uptown Funk - Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars

I feel like reviewing this song is akin to me reviewing water or oxygen. This song is THE 2010s and backed up by data too (according to Billboard). This is the most popular song of the 2010s according to Billboard and yeah this is a well deserved one. I honestly don't know what to say here like you have ears like? and also you are born before 2004 knew this song and how awesome it is right? Okay fine I'll try to have one new observation about this song. I think it's the fact that Mark Ronson is probably one of the most underrated songwriter and producers working today. The fact that he produced songs for the likes of Amy Winehouse and Wale at the same time should be commended as very versatile. Also apparently his step father is the guitarist from Foreigner...go figure.

    8. There's something to be said about the differences between what would be popular on the US and the rest of the world because it's very telling about the trends that many people might forgot. Looking at 2015 and 2016 the differences were stark because while America is about to embrace the dark moody sound thanks to trap rap, the rest of the world are in the midst of tropical house and EDM boom that will burst in a few years. What this means is that some songs will have one billion streams but your average Americans will only knew the song if they're listening to pop radio. For example!

8. Lush Life - Zara Larsson

By my criteria this counts for this year because it was released this year and is in the top streaming singles on Spotify. Even though to me this song is so emblematic of the vast difference between 2016 for USA and the rest of the world. Lush Life might just be one of the biggest hits of all time that never charted high on the States with only peaking at #75. I mean I get why, this breezy tropical house inspired song is probably not what Americans are into. But c'mon this song is one of the few reasons why I'm always prefer looking more globally because I wouldn't have found this song. That plucky guitar, the steel drum, and Zara herself making this song very loose and well lush. That bassline is what I would take home with me and have a great time...playing Split Fiction to. The fullness of this song really hammered home how Zara is being free caring and in a rush everytime but just breezy enough for it not being a chore. It's just a great little pop song that should've been a summer hit in America but alas.

    7. One of the breakout stars of this era are both in this song but the fact that this artists were not long ago was in a show called Victorious and making song like this???

7. Love Me Harder - Ariana Grande ft. The Weeknd

The fact that Ariana bringing in The Weeknd who up until that point was a semi popular RnB artist that is known to make down and moody track where sex, drugs, and partying is being portrayed as hedonistic fun in the realistic manner. The fact that she made him work on a very pop RnB tune is so fascinating and yet a stroke of genius. The juxtaposition between the very elegant and chic Ariana with the raw sexual nature of The Weeknd shouldn't worked at all. But the production and the framing is the star of the show.
This collaboration works because of how Ariana hold her own agains't The Weeknd here especially with how she has her agency and even domineering. This couldn't work though if the male character here is trying to be more domineering to the degree that could become really questionable. And yet, The Weeknd is floored with Ariana that he really accomodating with her and giving her the agency. It really helped that the production here is excellent. Its first note with that string synth really set the tone and from there it just becoming more and more tight. That chorus is probably the best Ariana has sounded up till this point. For the introduction to The Weeknd with the pop crowd, it's quite compelling.

    6. Though after that introduction, The Weeknd has to balanced the tight rope of becoming the pop star and still have that core audience that listened to him since House of Balloons. He was back and forth on this but with this song, he found the best balance and becoming one of the darkest #1 hit of the decade.

6. The Hills - The Weeknd

It's still remarkable that The Hills went to number one even with how unpop this sound is. You can say that this song is the catalyst of the shift in sound from an upbeat preppy sound to the more darker and moodier sound. Which yeah you definitely can see that. But, I'd say that few can topped what The Weeknd did on The Hills. The fact that this song really uncompromising vision really remained intact after releasing your most poppy song to date is really crazy. The fact that the song starts with the blaring synth immediately set the stage for what the song will become. A dark and brooding song about his hedonistic life coming back to bite him especially with The Hills Have Eyes imagery. The production really expanded on this with ominous synth, the booming earth shattering bass, and the scream really created a horror scenes than anything close to sexy. But that's really on purpose as The Weeknd really going on how he's very much this sex god and hedonist, and then you saw that veil just shattered once the people are watching him struggling with the consequence of his action. The fact that this very unpop song hit #1 is still mindblowing and honestly in a worse year this would've been at least as high #2 but alas.

    5. On October 16, 2024, The world was shook by the sudden announcement that Liam Payne passed away after he fell from three stories building in Argentina. That really came out of nowhere news really opened up a lot about how One Direction are viewed in retrospect. Now I have been a fan of One Direction since I wa 12 so I was pretty devastated that Liam died at such a young age (he was younger than my first brother for Christ sake). I know that their lyrics sometimes can be a bit iffy especially their debut and such. But I think that they really matured with the release of Four so much so that I was so excited to see what's next for them. Then Zayn left the band. And while they made one more album after his departure, it's basically done for One Direction. Which is why their last hit as a five members boyband is so special.

5. Night Changes - One Direction

Straight up this is one of the best love ballad of all time. From the wispy melody to the atmosphere and then the guitar filling in as we get to the chorus and the harmonies just oozing with care and comfort. All of the boys are bringing their best performance especially Niall and Harry here which are both will become very success and even critically acclaimed down the line. And that key chain on the final chorus really soared very hard to become one of the best love ballad of all time. But it's still the writing that put this over the top. Now the biggest crticism of One Direction is always the writing being a bit...shall we say immature. But with a little bit of growth and the fact that they...y'know grew up, they found the right formula to make this song to work. The fact that with the change from the first to the third person had been extraordinary especially with this song. You can hear the comfort that these five men gave to this girl that yeah once it's over you don't realized that it is over. The imagery of moving too fast here is key because while this song can be very cheesy, that imagery showed that something a bit more going on and making this song more compelling. A little bit of danger can't really hurt nobody. So it's no surprise that this song is the one that had the biggest rebound after Liam's passing. Even the haters have to say that yeah they have one song that's truly special.

    4. And now for something completely different and shaped the sound of pop music for years to come.

4. Where Ya At - Future ft. Drake

DS2 is rightfully one of the few pivotal albums that helped trap rap ascend to the popularity that we still have to grapple till this day. This year in particular we have a transition between the party rap Pitbull and Flo Rida to the more gritty and real trap rap from Future and Migos. And honestly the switch up is a long time coming. Even though those pop rap songs are very fun and lighthearted, when Black Lives Matter started to form after the death of Treyvon Martin and the general police brutality against black people in America. No shade towards Flo Rida and Pitbull but people definitely don't wanna hear more of that club slob even though they're mostly good club slob. Trap rap really captured the zeitgeist and the culture at the time which evolved to drill and more dancey Jersey Club sound. Yes I know trap rap was created in the mid 2000s but T.I. then sold out after 2007 and most of the trap rap that have crossed over were kinda novelty. But Future after tinkering with the sound really found his stride with this album and this song. This song really solidified Future and Drake as the super duo in hip-hop and I bet it'll last long...anyways.
The song itself is very brooding and menacing look at Future and Drake hedonism and comradarie. Metro Boomin really bringing his A game with this one with the chunky trap percussion and really menacing melody. The flows are as tight as ever for both of them and even Drake got that melodic flow on this one. People forgot that Drake's flow used to be really tight and melodic (reminder that this was in his If You're Reading This It's Too Late era. Enemy would've been here if it's eligible). In any case, I know how this story is going and might be ending? (I think Future might make amends less so about Metro) But for what it is, Where Ya At and DS2 opened up the door for more of this sounds and it's for the betterment or worsened of the chart.

    3. Sometimes an artist is great when they knew about their strengths and weaknesses. Limitation will always gonna be the stop gap between knowing to use your strength and how you avoid your weaknesses. This is why I'm always saying since 2017 that Demi Lovato should've made more of the pop rock stuff instead of soul RnB. Because I remembered what she's capable of.

3. Cool For The Summer - Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato should carried the mantle that Kelly Clarkson left behind in 2015 (Heartbeat Song is alright but still). I don't know who told them that pop rock isn't the right genre for her because Sorry Not Sorry is very lousy and very much using Demi's strength and turned it into her weaknesses with that sorry excuse of a productions. Cool For The Summer is perfect for her because the productions and instrumentation fit her rough and powerful voice the best. That chorus with the chugging riff and the big percussion and that harmonies. It really captured how forceful and just dominating she sounds. This song is tight and that's for a reason because this song is basically about Demi Lovato trying out sapphic experience for the first time. Now when I first listened to this song I was an egg who doesn't know yet that this kid will grew up with a trans girlfriend and oh that kid is gonna have their gender turned upside down (2015 was the last season of Gravity Falls and when I learned about Adventure Time and Steven Universe it's joever). So yeah questioning everything me really latched onto this song but really after all this year, I still felt that yearning even though I really can't express it well. In a way this song and how it sounded is really an experiment for Demi to see what sounds she wanna do and with that full creative control, she made probably the heaviest song on the Year-end List. All I can say to that kid who made this blog in the IT class is hey it's okay you can do it!

    2. You know, we probably should have a conversation about Taylor Swift older works now that she got her master recording back! I think a lot of people have dismissed Taylor Swift just because of the tabloid drama and what the media portrayed her as. A lot of them are fragantly misogynist and very much bullshit goss that sometimes you need to spill it out in singles after singles. Being that Taylor is one of the few pop stars back then that wrote her own songs, it's no surprised that she's gonna showed up to one of my best lists. But damn I didn't know that the song would be so high up.

2. Style - Taylor Swift

Honestly I'm glad that Taylor took a big leap and go straight pop. Even though some of her best stuff are from the country album or the indie folk stuff, there's some chic and even wonders on Taylor's synth pop style in mid 2010s. Really helped that she bringing in Jack Antonoff from Bleachers and fun. fame (yeah I know the meme but I think most Jack Antonoff stuff with Taylor are always gold). He really brung out the sophisticated sound that polished this song to be one of the best Taylor's singles ever. For one the writing of Taylor is more of a reminiscing instead of being sarcastic and jokey on the track before it "Blank Space" (that song is fine). Even though the relationship ended and she has been heartbroken a few too many times, she really still reminiscing the good old time with this guy (probably Harry Styles I mean c'mon look at that title). But when Meghan Trainor is being so up on her own ass, Selena is being more morrowful, and Miley...well whatever that was on that Flaming Lips collab album, Taylor is more restraint and even thinking about the old times. The imagery of James Dean and how tragic his life was elevated the angst into glamour which is just devastating. That take me home refrain with the pulsating beat, liquid guitar, and the harmonies just hit you with a ton of euphoria that yes turned it into an absolute gem.

Now before revealing my number one pick let's get through a long list of honorable mentions that just missed the cut

Budapest - George Ezra: This just missed the list proper and the British fluke crossover that edged out "Ghost" by Ella Henderson. That terrific guitar line and bass line will always with me alongside George Ezra's baritone voice. Nice guitar solo too.

Take Me To Church - Hozier: It's so funny but sad at the same time that the lasting legacy of this song is that people took the song's subject matter about being very horny that he needs guidance from God to even more lusting, and played it straight (pun intended). Remember kids once you made a very transgression shit, they'll commodified it.

Shut Up and Dance - WALK THE MOON: This isn't on the list because overplay basically. But wow what an opening and the chorus man. Definitely one of the few 80s pastiche that I love.

679 - Fetty Wap ft. Remy Boyz: No 2015 list would be complete if there's no Fetty Wap song on here. The fourth hit wonders here is basically the bridge between the pop rap and trap rap and it was glorious to hear.

Honey, I'm Good - Andy Grammer: Probably the only country adjecent here (country was started to tanked this year) and probably the contentious pick here. I think that the tone and framing of the song saved it from being too on the nose like say Cheerleader which would miss my worst list barely.

How Deep Is Your Love - Calvin Harris ft. Disciples: A return to form for Calvin Harris which became a really great modern house classic. The fact that I can't put this song on the best list just showed how strong this year is for best hits.

Black Magic - Little Mix: This is here thanks to the Spotify rule and what a great tune this is. Yeah this song sounds very cheap and very camp, but I really love the harmonies here. And we need more love songs themed around magic, they always worked for me.

Now let's finish this list then?

    1. One thing as any critic that you should looking for is being unpredictable. I mean you are criticizing media and you have your own opinions. Sometimes as a critic you have to present yourself as your own person and having media taste that's different as anyone else can be gratifying. As for me I'll always believe that my taste in music can be a bit basic but so what? At the end of the day I have to give props to a certain album just because we as a collective believe that it is one of the best albums of the 2010s. The fact that Kendrick made this song to become the cornerstone of rap, yeah I have to go with the consensus.

1. Alright - Kendrick Lamar

Let me tell you a bit of my story as to how I really love music as a medium. 2014 was the lowest moment for me and obviously I bounced back from that, but it was a rough time that included three days not going to school that's how bad it is. Anyways around this time music is really what mattered to and with that I watched a lot of stuff about pop music. At the end of 2014 I watched a lot of worst lists especially from Todd (back then he was in Channel Awesome so I have to watch them there it was diabolical). And then I came across Spectrum Pulse's list and I was hooked. Then I noticed he reviewed albums and one of his early reviews that hooked me was his review of Kendrick Lamar's "To Pimp A Butterfly" and when he gave it a very high score, I must listen to it. Now Spotify hasn't come out here yet, so the best way for me to listen to this album is through Soundcloud. And then the rest is history.
It's so funny that this album even with the universal appeal that it has and the critical backing, can only managed one hit. Though paradoxically this album got one hit at all is a miracle because I do believe that the wider American public are still hesitant with the politics of this album. And Alright is probably the perfect track to take a sample of because this is definitely the most "mainstream" sounding one out of all of them. This song was produced by Pharrell who also provided the hook and yeah this is definitely what Pharrell would've produced during mid 2010s. The only weakness here is the percussion can be distracting the mix. But once the trumpet hit against the vocal samples and more expressive delivery from Kung Fu Kenny himself. Now look there are some criticism that you can say about Kendrick especially when he's doing politics they can't all be winners here. But Alright is really something special in that even though it's his experience as a black man in a white supremacist country, his universality and his reassureness are what make this song soared so high. The fact that this became a hit at all especially from an album that's very heavy, that's the reason why this is the best hit songs of 2015

Thank you everyone for reading this blog I can't believe it has been ten years since I made this blog and through thick and thin I still care about you all and please take care of each other! Oh also here's my revised worst hits of 2015
