Monthly Girls Nozaki-kun Review

Can't believed I watch this anime because I saw a compilation of Kashima, oh well hello everyone SGWHO here and let's talk about romance anime. Romance and anime is like bread and a jams, very common and the quality of it is determined whether you like the bread or the jam. now my favorite bread and jam is romantic comedy. Something about how these characters interacted with each other in comedic way but they still have a feelings with each others really grabbed me. Also one of the things that these anime has to offers is the great story or if it's episodic anime great humor and believable characters. speaking of characters that can be romantic anime's biggest weaknesses. sometimes they can be generic, submissive or worst case scenario just plain awful.

That's why when I've some buzz around Monthly Girls Nozaki-kun around my circle I'm interested by it. especially the key animation of this anime also has animated To LOVE-ru before this and also has Kawasumi Ayako who did the voice of Saber to top it off it was been done by Doga Kobo who made Yuru Yuri and Mikakunin so I just check this anime and see what's up and hey it's the month of February month of love so this is the perfect time to review this so what do we get with this

Well honestly this is probably one of my favorite anime I've ever watched. No joke if I made my top 10 anime of all time this will be at least in the top 3. And all of this comes from the balance between the comedy and the bait and switch stories it has. Now before we talk about why that is, let's look at the plot of this anime.

Sakura Chiyo is your average high school girl who has a crush on Nozaki since the first time she met and one day she shyly confesses her loves but due to her nervousness she's stumbled to say it but as a twist Nozaki gave her his signature and take her to his house where she helped his manga. Now this sounded rather generic enough but what makes it stands out is the characters. and what I love about this anime is the subverted roles of the tropes of these type of anime like tsundere, Dandere, Kuudere etc. instead of female that got these tropes, it's the male characters. Like Mikoshiba who's very cocky at first but when he said a corny pickup lines he started to feel embarrassed just like a shy girls, Hori is obvious tsundere, and Nozaki is clearly a kuudere especially towards Chiyo. Also the female cast are also being subverted into male role, like Seo who's the sporty brat but has a soft spots, and there's Kashima the dumb girl that really looks like a male when I asked it to my friends which is another plus. Really the only main cast that I don't really like is Watanabe who without Seo can be a bit generic but when he's with Seo it's a great combo.

Speaking of which, the interactions between these characters are some of the best I've seen in romcom. Even though it's basically just your typical affairs when it comes to these sort of anime or even TV Shows, what I love about this is the role reversal of these type of situation. Hori does care for Kashima but do it in tsundere level, Nozaki being air-headed towards Sakura, Mikoshiba always regretted his pick up lines like a girl and Seo being way to mean for Watanabe. All of these interactions makes for great variety of comedy that no shows has to offers and for once it felt really fresh and unique that these sort of situation being subverted to i's own advantage and sometimes it does land pretty well.

The voice acting of this anime is exceptional especially the voice of Nozaki and the comic characters, they are spot on with their character, doesn't overacting and instead very reserved and I respect that. The animation is okay especially for a middle of a road anime studios but it served the purpose well for visuals gag and the reaction of each characters.

But as any anime there's some minor complain about this show. The side characters isn't that great especially the editor kinda forgettable there, and then there's the ending which I won't spoiled it for you but for those who have saw this anime will know what happened to Sakura and Nozaki and yeah it's kinda insulting but it's a romance anime, the odds to have a good or great ending in romance anime is like the odds of Chris Brown making good music.

In the end however I do love this anime. It's one of those anime that only appeared once in a while to reminded you that romcom isn't as dull as anyone has said it to be or as creepy I'm looking at you Oreimo. So with that I'll gave this a strong 9/10 and definitely a recommendation to all anime fans and for those who don't just take a look at some episode you'll might found some page worth turning.
