Hello good morning, afternoon, evening, and night everybody and welcome to our regular Top 40 review, but with a little twist.
As suggest by the title, today we gonna talk about my country charts aka Prambors Top 40. just to mix things up a little bit and also talk about some gems that our country have. And also because Billboard Top 40 is fucking horrendous. If you still waiting for that chart review well this is the summary because I didn't want to suffer to hear that god-awful Meghan Trainor song anymore so here it is.
This is the worst chart that I've ever seen in my life of being a charts observer. The list of songs ranging from lazy slap put together droning songs to overproduced annoying party songs. Like this charts is so bad that I could make top 20 worst songs of this year alone with this charts, and still have dishonorable mention. Any songs that in Top 40 right now doesn't seems to have any meaning to exist unlike last year. The fact that we still have 4 months of this shit and everybody at America seems to avoid instant smash hit over generic Hip-Hop track that seemed big in streaming and nothing else (I'm looking at you Drake) made me rate this charts 87/200 or estimated to be 4/10 which is not good.
Now that was out of my chest let's talk about our charts. It seems that our charts is contrast to the America one and that's because our charts is kinda amazing. I mean the Billboard one only have six great songs which was only 10,4%. But our charts at least in my opinion has 11 great songs with one song in my opinion is one of the best songs of this decade. That's 30% of the charts right now and I couldn't be more happier with that.
Of course before we talked about that songs we gonna talk about the crap first. And what better way to start with the definition of shit beside Raja Gosnell and Young Thug, Meghan Trainor.
40. Me Too by Meghan "the devil" Trainor
Meghan is really started to soured on me, back at 2014 I thought she could had a potential to become a pop diva we always wanted since Madonna gave it away. But single after single prove me that she's really whinny and spoiled little shit who doesn't know what she wants to talk about and this song is final nail in the coffin because this is her worst song yet. Who told her that re-making The Time (Dirty Bit) by The Black Eyed Peas was remotely a good idea especially with the bass so stiff it makes Scream and Shout sounds more lively. especially when you've got the pre-chorus that sounded really good before smash it with the chorus with pitched shifted bridge that just sounded annoying and tedious instead of bombast that she desperately want. and the lyric is some of the worst lyric I've ever heard, I mean this is the line of the song.
"My life is a movie, Tom Cruise"
"So baby blessed me, Achoo"
Still No Video
What The Fuck Drake?
And is about as deep as you could get from Meghan. The content of this song is rancid, hey Meghan if you really proud of your boasting and targeting your audience to being you, you should've not said that stupid line. Couple with her fake accent that makes me owe Iggy Azalea an apology here makes this song the worst of 2016 thus far and it will stayed there until something worse hit the charts
So congratulation Meghan for being the worst artist ever worked in the industry NEXT!
39. Treat You Better by Canadian Dorkiest Ed Sheeran
Well this is something, this was 2016 and everyone seems wanted to try Caribbean inflexion so why not this dorky Canadian tried. Yeah no, just no because his voice is so limp to carry this song about you tell this girl to dump her boyfriend because he can "Treat her better". Yeah I used quotation because I didn't buy this one for a second. Especially with this production, we got another tropical synth but a bit compressed, sandy percussion, limp guitar and bass that doesn't match together, and the most un-impressive guitar solo I've heard all year. All of that is compressed with reverb and thin fuzz that made this song so sluggish and thick for a summer jam and it doesn't sound so fun.
Also this is badly written as well, what did you expect from Teddy Geiger anyways. Add a little bit of awkward chorus and voila you got yourself a bad song. I swear to god if it wasn't for that guitar solo, even though that guitar solo wasn't impressive, it's still sounded good. This would be the worst hit songs of 2016.
38. This Is What You Came For by Rihanna ft. Calvin Harris
Well this year would've been completed without bland yet insufferable Calvin Harris song. My experience with him is kinda rocky, in 2009-2010 he's what I considered to be one of the worst DJ. His production lacked any restraint and subtlety so his song is kinda give me a headache. But in 2013 he's kinda become more popular because of EDM boom that happened that year, and to his credit, his style is kinda evolved with more restraint but still had bombastic to really make it worked so well. Songs like Summer, I Need Your Love, Sweet Nothing, my personal favorite How Deep Is Your Love. but apparently he's back recruiting Rihanna again to make another EDM song and wow this song sucked. Calvin seemed to be back to his un-restraint style like his good ol' day with those pitch shifted chorus and it sounded grading. especially paired that with pretty limp melody, sparse percussion and Pan-flutes that's too thin it made me hated it even though Pan-flutes is my favorite instrument. The lyric isn't worth carrying about, Rihanna is really sounded so un-natural I think she's a different singer.
In short this song is what I hated EDM song and in a better world this song would plummet but as it is I would skip it.
37. Rise by Paty Kerry
Before I made this list, I forgot that this song is exist at all. Like this is one of the most forgettable song I've ever heard, Fight Song is still memorable than this. And if you got beat up by a white bread than you just should retire. But I don't think I should blame Katy for this even though she's sounded so bored in here. No the problem is in the production.
First question here, where's the melody and why you drown Katy voice at the chorus. the drudging synth with this loud drum and brittle trap snare makes this song just felt like a mush and lumpy. The mixing is a mess, and the content of this song is even more forgettable than Just Like Fire and Fight Song. In short this is the most boring Katy Perry song I've ever heard I done care about this.
36. This One's For You by David Guetta ft. Zara Larsson
I think that David Guetta is the artist that kinda hit or miss for me. He could do some party song that actually good like I Gotta Feeling, Hey Mama, Club Can't Handle Me, and Dangerous. But he can piss me off with his annoying side like Sexy Bitch, Rock That Body, Bang My Head, and this song that used for Euro Cup this year. and this is by far the worst sport event anthem I've ever heard, Yeah even worse than Rise and that song for World Cup 2014 with Pitbull and J-Lo.
Once again we had I Took A Pill In Ibiza knock-off with the breezy synth and marching band type percussion, before we hit with the pitch-shifted synth tone that sounded so annoying I swear Dawin could co-produce this. And the problem wasn't over yet because the bridge is just the worst thing ever with those group chanting that I'll bet they stole from soundbyte out of Fifa games with subtle trumpets and it sounded so shit.
Yeah this song sucks, Zara Larsson sounded fake and the lyric once again doesn't mean anything other than you're specials. NEXT!!!!!!!
35. I Found A Girl by The Vamps ft. OMI?
Woah this song is so stupid. The premise of this song is that he Invited a girl that he saw at his apartment and he approach her. And turns out she's a lesbian. And he doesn't accept that thing.........
Um you know if someone is lesbian you can't just sad over that especially when you still doesn't accept that at the second verse. It's so pissy and bitter that I cringe every time they sing the hook. And the production sucks too, who told that blend in that awful synth and the thick fuzz with clap percussion is remotely a good idea. It's sound so blaring and annoying as hell. as for the verse it reminded me of The Script style of production with loud drum, subtle piano, and an Ukulele? What!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And now for the bad tier, not toxic but also not good.
34. Cheap Thrills by Sia
I don't know why this song is huge right now despite being unfinished and unpolished. I mean the bridge is empty for fuck sake. Of course this song is popular because the production which is limp reggae production that could be worked if it sang by Rihanna, oh wait this song is got rejected by Rihanna and Sia puts this and bunch of other rejected songs on her last album.
But that doesn't excuse the production still. Limp synth tone back by minimalist bass and percussion made this song so stiff. and that chorus is so grating with additional chipmunk voice, which was fine if there was a Sean Paul on it but that version is "Too Dirty" for us islamic country to take amirite.
So yeah even though this is far from her worst, it's still pretty terrible and hopefully this song loses it's thrill to go up.
33. Work From Home by 5 Harmony ft. Ty $
Well this song is kinda grew on me a little bit. Still not impressed with Camilla voice, but everyone bringing their A-Game especially Normani and Dinah who seemed to be my favorite link in this. but still everything is bad like Ty Dolla Sign verse, the fact that this song is written by male, and pretty bland production makes this song a lost potential.
Now we go to Meh tier.
32. Say It by Flume ft. Tove Lo
Well this is one of the weirdest song on the charts right now, and I don't think I like it though. I mean the foundation is a beauty with glossy melody with gleaming synth that's sounded so good. But the hook happen and wow it's sound bad with blaring synth and compressed percussion and trap snare. It felt like I'm getting a whiplash every time I heard this song because there's no build up and as a result it's sounded kinda jarring. And that synth bridge is so grating and yet so strange at the same time.
Tove Lo actually bring some life with this production but I don't think she sell the subject about fantasy sex and the encounters with the "Shadow". Gave this song to Lana Del Rey and it would hit a lot harder. as it is this would either grew or shrunk on me. we'll see how it happened.
31. Send My love by Adele
This song doesn't remotely sound like a Adele songs. it's sounded like if Sia cover Someone Like You. it didn't have any edge courtesy of Max Martin production which was generic with just Guitar and Drum Machine or Trap maybe because I was waiting to hear Hi-hat in the chorus to gave this something interesting. Other than that there's nothing to talk about, it's about as generic as you could get from Adele. NEXT!!
30. One Dance by Drak ft. Wizla and Kykid
Still No Video
What The Fuck Drake?
Well this song is really grew on me after I reviewed it. Now looked while the samples is really bad quality wise and how jumbled it was make this song kinda misshapen. But now I liked the dancehall type production with those piano and the beat it's really good. But the part where this song really grew on me is the lyric and content. It's about Drake really insecure about his surrounding like gang activity and all the violence, and the only way he's could calm himself is with alcohol and just one dance. This is reminds me of Record Year by Eric Church but more broader but goddamn if it not really good
Again if this song removed the unnecessary samples and could tight up the production, it could be better.
This is almost made my decent tier but I looked at the lyrics and found some ugly stuff in there. well let's talk about the production, with those piano, sparse muted beat, and some slickest whistle voice you'll ever hear this year. but the lyric is bad, it's like Shake It Off where she's targeting the haters and media and just kill them with kindness and forget about it. But this song is about addressing that right? If so then you're hypocrite and why you make this song in the first place.
29. Kill Em' With Kindness by Selena Gomez
28. CAN'T STOP THIS FEELING! by the better Justin
This song it's too stable because the melody is played 2 or 3 same notes and the guitar played 2 same chords. If I could compared this song to an F1 track it would be Sochi Autodrome. Long twisty circuit but it mostly stable and there's no elevation changes makes this track so hard to overtake and got really boring really fast.
Now to some decent song that I kinda like.
27. LiKe i wOuLD bY ZAyn
I almost love this song until the hook. Those heavy synth and the flourish key it's sounded good, and that synth build-up is really good with thick fuzz and the choir it's sounded tight. But that chorus is just an anti-climatic way to do it with heavy percussion, the guitar that sounded like a synthesizer, and limp bass that clash with the beat.
Also part of this song that I didn't really like is the sentiment behind these lyrics. This is way too pissy than Sorry and it is not pretty to hear him whining about his break up and how you knew her body as an excuse. but at least in the bridge he's think this is the wrong thing to do and he do it anyways so what's the point of that. Again if this song was not pissy this would be awesome but as it is it's pretty decent but I'm not gonna care for this song.
Now we gone to Good tier, I like this song but it's not gonna appeared in my best list.
26. The Feeling by Just in Bieber ft. Halsey
I like this production, the hazy synth paired with tribal percussion and brittle hi-hat, especially with the twinkling synth in the chorus it sounded really good. But of course it's only at decent tier because the hollow vocal production, Justin Bieber negging this girl and compared her to "jagged pill that so hard to swallow" that's really terrible there Justin playing Halsey felling like that.
In short I wanna to like this song more but that vocals is killing me and the rancid lyrics made me wanna die, Next.
In short I wanna to like this song more but that vocals is killing me and the rancid lyrics made me wanna die, Next.
25. i hate u, i love u by Gnashvile ft. Olivia O'Brian
This song is captivating but it's not great. Where to start with this, well let's talk about the positive about this song is the production and Olivia O'Brian hook. This is probably the most gripping production that I've ever heard this year, the piano is played well against the handclap percussion and bass and it made one sweet ass background music. The hook is beautiful as well, Olivia is killing it in this one with her voice that played well with the lyrics about her frustrated about this broke up, she's think she was being used by Gnash but Gnash actually had something to say with his verse addressing that he wanted this relationship to be more serious and they were just a friend with benefit yesterday but now he's moved on. That's surprisingly melancholic and it would've been in the good tier.......
Except Gnash delivery is really a carbon copy of Drake and I kinda rolled my eyes when he's rapping. Other than that this song could've been a lot better than it should.
24. No One Can Stop Us by Dipha Barus ft. Kalulla
Now we go to one of three Indonesia songs in Indonesia charts.........seriously. But that's not a problem for me, especially with this being a hit instead of Sambalado or god forbid any of cheap Dangdut songs. So let's talk about this song which is the answer to the question "Can we made a decent while still a little annoying party song?". Now to be fair this isn't bad, I like that breezy synth and the sandy snaps backing of pretty good melody flourish and especially switching up for Gamelan on the half of the verses it's sounded good, but that choppy vocal fragment it's really irratating and flat out doesn't connect with the rest of the song.
The lyric it's your typical party love songs where she's want him to be forever with her and it's kinda cliche. But the production is good enough so I'll give it a pass.
23. Cold Water by Major Lazer ft. J Biebs ft. Muh
This is almost good, I like the liquid guitar and the percussion itself is good and I like that brassy trumpets even though it's kinda compressed and the bass is really make this song so bumpin'. My issues with this song is the lyric where it's yet again another sex song disguise itself by using any kind of metaphor for sex. Like Cake By The Ocean or the abysmal Marvin Gaye by Charlie Puth. This time it's about cold water metaphor, where if you only see the surface it would seems to be two romantic just want to swim in the night. But no it's about sex, well maybe about sex it could be taken as literal here. And it's kinda generic to be honest. So yeah I think this is the best spot for this song. Next
22. Whenever I Go by OneRepublic
I honestly don't know why this song has so much hate lately, I mean I can see the problem here. Ryan Tedder falsetto, the off-kilter production the fact that they used the minor chords to made this song unsettling, or the lyrics that could be about Religion seeking or finding a passionate lovers. But this song has enough groove to win me over so I'll still take it.
21. Hair by British Fifth Harmony ft. Seanapaul
Good god this song is rachet as fuck. their attitude is so like Meghan Trainor and it made me hurt especially when they tried to "bleach him out" ew!!!!! And why you applying this guy to Flea that's gross. Also this production is a mess, the bass is too loud, there's no actual melody apart for that vocal fragment, there's too much reverb, the chorus especially where it changes to these choppy percussion with brass hit and vocal sample from Harlem Shake and it's sounded like Bang Bang but at least that song is still cohesive.
But why am I put this song in decent tier you may ask, well maybe because Little Mix had so much energy and chemistry together that when the bridge ended I felt blessed. And also Sean Paul is the best thing ever.
Again this song has lots and lots of problem, and if this still stuck around it would be insufferable as hell. But as it is I'll take them over Meghan Trainor any day of the week.
20. How To Love by Cash Cash ft, Sofia Reyes
This is almost good. I like the warm breezy synth even though there's too much reverb, the piano accent the lo-fi guitar, and the whole bridge is so damn good especially with the rubbery synth build up to a killer hook. But my issues with this song is the vocal, Sofia Reyes is just blaring on this one, and even her voice is cracking and it doesn't sound good at all. And the lyrics is about your standard break-up song with the regret she had with this guy, although you did that to yourself but I can see why she's gotten this situation, but there's no telling to why you want to be with this guy. I don't know it's kinda nitpicky but damn that's bothering about this song.
Now we gone to Good tier, I like this song but it's not gonna appeared in my best list.
19. Pelangi by Hivi!
Another Indonesia song this time is from Hivi, and it is a gorgeous song, starting out with Music Box in the background of rain and when it stop it changes to liquid guitar and it sounded good, and added strings and flute and you got a beautiful song, surprisingly there's no percussion in this song and it make this song sound organic. The lyric is good too, telling a story of a long distance relationship the singer have and when she met her boyfriend for the first time but it didn't take too long for them together, being compared to a beautiful rainbow. It leave some really good melancholic moment and it surprisingly gripping. My only complain is that the singer is kinda too cute for for her own damn good so any drama in this song becomes melodramatic. but that's minor gripe for otherwise good song.
18. 7 Years by Lukas Forchammer
Wow this song is so polarizing to many critics, and I can see why because there's some assumption that he made his story and bragging about his future while imagining the future does gets on some nerve of critics. But all that isn't mattered because I still stand by my opinion on Twitter (@Ahlun2000 by the way) that this is a gorgeous song with those music box intro to the beautiful drumming, to Lukas sincere vocal that made a lot of impact, and it is beautiful. I'm still kinda cringe about his assumption to his future but otherwise this is really good and hopefully he can stick around.
Now the good tier is done, this is all I could consider a gem. Yes 17 songs in the great tier, this year has been good to us Indonesian.
17. Good Grief by Bastille
And here's why our charts is slightly better, there's another Bastille song in our Top 40. And it kinda not hard to see why it got charted because this is awesome. The bass that drive the groove is really nice behind the slick guitar, hollow drum, and that little synth tone is really nice. even though the chorus sounds so hollow but it's still good and I can groove to this any day of the week.
The content is good too about Dan Smith coping his loss to his lovers and ups and downs with coping that loss. It's the type of dark writing that Bastille sells at and it is great. check this song if you haven't already it's great.
16. Never Forget You by Zara Larsson ft. MNEK
You know this chart is good that even Never Forget You is in the bottom half of the great tier. But my opinion hasn't changed since I reviewed it on my Spring Ranking. Next.
15. Rock Bottom by Hailee Steinfeld ft, Joe Jonas
Well this is unexpected, I though her career would be dead after she released Love Myself but no she's got another hit with this song this time featuring Joe Jonas. and you know what's weirder is that I love this song, They both had so much chemistry behind glossy synth, reverb touched melody before the heavy synth chorus happened and it sounded perfect. and the content is perfect taking a relationship that seems to be back and forth between these two but they can still find the madness behind it and it sounded and execute pretty well. definitely take this one.
14. Up&Up by Coldplay
Is it weird that we got the third singles by Coldplay from decent while boring album A Head Full Of Dream? but that's fine at least the single is good part of the album. And while this is the weaker single so far, I still love this song. The conclusion song that ended their album is got to be big, and they nailed it. The piano riff that kicks off this song and the faded percussion with the strings it sounded really good especially with that guitar solo, makes this song has a country feels to it and mine as well talk about the lyrics and let me say that the writing in this one is good even by a power ballad standard. and the content is good to, where Chris Martin encourages us to be more optimist in live and in loving each other and it so moving and I like it.
13. Don't Let Me Down by The Chainsmokers ft. Daya
I thought after reviewing it, this song would shrunk on me. But no, in fact it's grew on me for the past months. I thought the drop would be annoying but now it sounded epic. Now let's just say that there's gonna be two The Chainsmokers songs on my best list now.
12. Go Now by Adam Levine
Wow is this a surprisingly good song coming from a robotic chicken. this surprisingly had a lot of emotion and that's saying something coming from Adam Levine. it's started out pretty standard with heavy piano but it's build up to an acoustic guitar and ramshackle percussion before it bleeds to an electric guitar and strings and it's sounded beautiful. It had a lot of impact and probably for a good reason because this is a beautiful song.
11. Talk by DJ Snake ft. George Maple
Another year isn't completed without a damn good party jams and DJ Snake bringing this one bangers over here. Muted keys, popping bass, before it bleeds into the chorus with that "Brrah" sound effect just before it, with warped vocal effect, and a Xylophone which make this song sounds so lively, and that outro is the best sound I've ever heard all year.
George Maple sounds good in this song that's about they can't have sex because her partners is just want to talk, and how frustrated she is as the song progress through and surprisingly potent I really like this song and hopefully this might charted in the Billboard.
10. Kali Kedua by Raisa
This is the best Indonesia song that charted this week, and it's not hard to see why. The piano ballad that's well structured about Raisa want to reconciled with her ex-boyfriend for the second time and see if this worked out in their favors, It's surprisingly gripping and Raisa once again bringing her A-game with this song as her emotion is displayed in full how she wantesd this one would stick. It's really A great song and I couldn't be more happier to recommend to you guys.
9. Girls Talk Boys by Diet Green Day
Before I praised this song first we gonna talk about Maroon 5 and they hay-day at 2007 where they released their best song ever "Makes Me Wonder". It's the funkiest song that come up in the last decade and for a good reason because that song was my childhood songs alongside Viva La Vida and Numb. And I kinda missed that kinda song, Funky but also had a rock edges to it. But 5SOS had that answer because this song kicks ass. The fuzzed guitar is balanced well with the bass and the drums pretty well and it's not slick enough to make this song so saccharine. And wow they can sings in this one also their falsetto is good too.
In short this is an awesome song and certainly better than the movie.
8. Into You by Ariana Grande
Oh man is this a good song, and good throwback to 80's synth pop as well, Especially with that bridge with clouds of synth that made this song bigger and had a lot of impact. And thankfully Ariana is cooing rather than belting because this sound sexy as hell and match up with the lyrics. Great song I'll take it
7. No Money by Galantis
Even though Galantis isn't an impressive DJ, he can make some great songs and this is one of them. Yeah even though the singing wasn't that impressive but it help the innocent tone of the song, especially with the content. The production is to why I love this song, as always it's my rules to gave a song either good or great grade if it had Xylophone or Pan-Flutes, and this one is no exception. Plus the piano and the trumpets make this song sounds so happy and it makes me happy as well.
It's a cute song and definitely his best song by a mile.
6. This Girl by Kungs X Cookin' On 3 Burners
I didn't really like interpolation all that much especially when the song it interpolate was good. But I've heard the original first and the remix second, and you know what I like the remix more than the original. The original had a jazzy feels and while it's good it doesn't match the sentiment of this girl not being materialistic. But the remix on the other hand is more reckless as if they just met at the party with the liquid guitar and added that trumpets make this song quite bumpin'.
5. Faded by Alan Walker
This song has been my jams over the summer because this is the most epic song I've ever heard on pop radio. started out pretty nice with the piano and the singer in here sounds good mix between Ellie Goulding and Starfire from Teen Titans. Until the synth build up to a bigger sound made this one hell of a journey through finding his lover that lost. This production is something else and nothing sounds like it and that's why this is the best electronica song thus far this year.
4. Lush Life by Zara Larsson
WHY THE FUCK IS THIS SONG HASN'T BEEN POPULAR IN AMERICA. THIS SONG HAS BEEN HUGE IN A LOT OF COUNTRY. YOU KNOW WHY THIS SONG IS GOOD SO I'M GONNA LISTED OFF THE COUNTRY THAT HAVE THIS SONG AS THEIR NUMBER ONE, ENJOY!!!!!!!!!
Mexico, Poland, Sweden, and Indonesia.............................................................................................
well that was a short list damn.
3. Dangerous Woman by Ariana Grande
I'm still in the minority that loved with this song so much, mostly with the production. It has a lot of punch especially in the bridge with the Guitar solo that sounded good as hell. So yeah this song has grew on me and it is by far her best song to date.
2. I Took A Pill In Ibiza by Mike Posner (SeeB Remix)
My opinion hasn't changed for this song but you asked yourself to why I didn't pick this song as my number one, well.......................
1. Hymn For The Weekend by Coldplay ft. Beyonce
Everything about this song clicks for me, the piano, the production, Beyonce, the cowbells, the brass, everything about this song worked for me. It's like a new adventure every time I heard this song and that's saying something. I think the reason why this song worked so well is just my expectation is blew away the first time I heard this song. I wanted the Pop sellout Coldplay at least made a song that's epic like Viva La Vida while still sounded pop, and this song gets it.
I can call this the best songs of this decade so far it is damn good.
Now that was done now we tally the score and after some scoring, this charts is tally up the score of............................................................................................. 129/200
That's a lot and definitely a good charts.
Now that was done I'm gonna drink bleach after hearing Break Your Heart so see ya next year.
